Paper wasps are not hostile creatures. I worked with them all last summer. I was actively messing with their nests as part of a research project. Although I had a full bee suit half the time I left the veil off. If the wasps were particularly obnoxious on a given day I could typically get them to leave me alone (even while holding their nest) by walking 15 feet away from the wood box mounted on t-posts where their nests were kept during most of the time.
