Walnut Tree

Walnuts (Urdu: Akhrot-اخروٹ) are the plants in the genes Juglans, family Juglandacea. They are deciduous trees which grow at 1,000–3,000 meters altitude. In Pakistan walnut trees are also occur wildly in the areas of Galliat, Chitral, Abbotabad, Swat, Dir, Shangla and Buner.

Fig tree is one of the trees that sprout new shoots very early. Their shoots are considered as a first sign of spring. They start new shoots in the end of January, when the weather is still very cold.

Phulai-Acacia modesta

Phulai (Acacia modesta) is a species of Acacia, in the family Fabaceae, commonly found in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. It is a moderate sized thorny tree which is largely used for fuel. The leaves and tender shoots of branches are used as fodder for cattle. In domestic language Pashto it's called Palosa.

Babul Tree-Acacia nilotica

Babul Tree (Acacia nilotica) is a species of Acacia native to Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. It's a member of fabaceae family. It's known by a number of names including kikar, gum arabic tree Egyptian thorn, thorn mimosa, Sant tree, scented thorn, Al-sant or prickly acacia. It's is a large tree, upto 14 metres high, with thorns on its branches. It has darkish grey bark and yellow flowers in spherical heads.

Black Mulberry-Morus nigra

The Black mulberry (Morus nigrais) is a species of flowering plant in the family Moraceae (mulberry family), tribe Moreae. It is a common tree grown in the plain areas of KPK. It's basically grown for shade and wood, which is mainly used in sports goods industry in Pakistan. The dark purple colored fruit is though edible, but is rarely eaten by the local people. The fruit and the root are used to cure many throat related ailments.

Wild Fig Tree

This wild fig tree (Probably Ficus variegata) grows in northern areas of Pakistan. The strange thing about this tree is that the figs (fruit) grow on trunk and mature branches and that is why it is called "Trunk fruiting fig". Contrary to common figs which ripen in June, these figs ripen in August. It is called "Urmal" in local language Pashto in district Buner, NWFP.

Flowering Pomegranate

Here are a few flowers pictures of Flowering Pomegranate (Punica granatum) also known as Noshi Shibari or double flower pomegranate. I brought the cutting of this plant from Gomal University D.I.Khan in 2000. As I plant the cutting in inappropriate place i.e under my grapes plant, therefore it took 9 years to start flowering. This plant generally produces flowers in most part of the year, but my plant stop flowering in July. It produces vibrant red colored blooms, which turn white with passage of time. This pomegranate does not bear fruits. My camera failed to focus on these flowers, that is why the pictures you see here are not very clear.

Papaya Plants

This is the first time, I ever saw a papaya plant and green papaya fruit. In our area people don't grow papaya, may be because of our extreme weather. From the top this plant is covered with a plastic sheet to protect it from cold.
Papaya (Carica papaya), also known as papaw or pawpaw belong to family Caricacea. The Papaya is a tree-like plant, usually without branches, that grows up to 10 meters tall. The large deeply lobed leaves (50–70 cm in diameter), are borne on long, hollow petioles emerging from the stem apex. The five petals fragrant flowers appear on the axils of the leaves. Generally, the fruit is oval to nearly round. Fruits are 15-50 cm long and 10–20 cm wide, and weigh up to 9 kg. The oval fruits are 15-50 cm long and 10–20 cm wide, and weigh up to 9 kg. Some plants are bisexual, having flowers with both male and female organs, but other plants have flowers with only one sex and need female plants need a nearby male plant for proper pollination.

The Last Leaf on Tree

This is almost the mid of January. The winter is not extreme with us this year that is why you can see a last survival of not only autumn, but also of winter.

Sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo), is an erect deciduous tree, native to the Indian Subcontinent. It is known by a nubers of names, including sisu, sheesham, tahli, ndian rosewood, blackwood-tree, Bombay blackwood and Indian dalbergia. The heartwood of sissoo coloring from golden to dark brown, is among the finest timbers. It is extremely durable and very resistant to dry-wood termites. In our area sissoo tree is one amongst the most wild growing trees. In Pakistan some years ago there were a lot of sissoo trees particularly by roads and canals sides, but due to fungal disease 'dieback' they are dying with a rapid speed. But the agricultural authorities are doing nothing in this regard.
