Shadam-A Small Village

Shadam is a small village on the top of a mound, consists of a few houses. It's located in tehsil Amazai, district Buner of NWFP. It's a beautiful village, located on a beautiful location. This village always attract my attention during my service in district Buner. The mountain in the backgroud is the well know Mahaban mountain located in three districts, Buner, Swabi and Mansehra.

Baja Swabi

Baja, the small, but beautiful village of Swabi famous for many reasons. Most of the people are educated as compared to other villages. Most of them serve in the Pakistani army. Many of them are doctors, professors, civil judges. But the main reason of its popularity is the professional female dancers. It is situated between the Pehur and Steffa canals. The main Swabi-Topi road passing through the Baja and divide it in two parts. Its neighbor villages are Bamkhel, Kalabat, Khota and Jhanda.

I took this pictures today, Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 8:14 am, while on my way to office. In the picture you see Allah Arabic name written by clouds just underneath the Sun. The picture is not clear because I have to take it from behind the vehicle glass.

Papaya Plants

This is the first time, I ever saw a papaya plant and green papaya fruit. In our area people don't grow papaya, may be because of our extreme weather. From the top this plant is covered with a plastic sheet to protect it from cold.
Papaya (Carica papaya), also known as papaw or pawpaw belong to family Caricacea. The Papaya is a tree-like plant, usually without branches, that grows up to 10 meters tall. The large deeply lobed leaves (50–70 cm in diameter), are borne on long, hollow petioles emerging from the stem apex. The five petals fragrant flowers appear on the axils of the leaves. Generally, the fruit is oval to nearly round. Fruits are 15-50 cm long and 10–20 cm wide, and weigh up to 9 kg. The oval fruits are 15-50 cm long and 10–20 cm wide, and weigh up to 9 kg. Some plants are bisexual, having flowers with both male and female organs, but other plants have flowers with only one sex and need female plants need a nearby male plant for proper pollination.

This is almost the mid of January. The winter is not extreme with us this year that is why you can see a last survival of not only autumn, but also of winter.

Praying Mantis Larvae

I have kept some praying mantis egg pods on the hope that some babies praying mantis will come out from them in the spring or early summer. So I decided to cut one of them to see praying mantis larvae. I took some photos to serve my visitors, who often visit my blog to see praying mantis larvae. Actually these are undeveloped nymphs.

Bringing clean water in pitchers was a part of our tradition some time ago, when there were lack of water wells. Bringing water was the duty of women. For this purpose they had to go to common well of the village or near by river. The best times were early in the morning and after noon. Generally a woman had to carry two to four pitchers, one in her hand and the remaining on head. In the southern areas of NWFP, particularly in district karak, still women had to bring water in clay made pitchers. During in my university life in Gomal University D.I.Khan, while travailing from Peshawar to D.I. Khan, the women walking by road side in a row, with water pitchers, always attract my attention.

Ox Cart

Ox cart or bull cart (Bel gadi-بیل گاڈی) is an essential part of our agriculture system in Pakistan. It is a source of transportation for our farmers. They use ox carts for carrying agriculture products to home or market. Due to high level of poverty our farmers are not in the position to buy expensive tractors or other vehicles for transportation.
